...ANNOUNCING A NEW STUDIO LOCATION! I have secured an open ended agreement to rent studio space from the DANCE THEATER AT FIRST STREET STUDIO. This is a large, convenient, well-appointed studio for dance and acting classes. It has a special rubber dance floor so we don't have to walk around on cold hard concrete all night.
LOCATION: the address in Austin is 2400 Cesar Chavez (1st Street). Suite 202. It's 1 mile east of I-35 on Cesar Chavez between Robert Martinez Street and Pedernales. (Just around the corner from John Williams' Casting Station for those of you who have auditioned there. The fancy restaurant Juniper is right there as well.)
Turn into the large parking lot on the north side of C. Chavez and the Dance Theater will be on the East side at SUITE 202.
There is lots of free parking in a well-lit area. There should be no problem parking in the evening but the parking lot goes back a ways and there is angle parking on the residential street just behind also.
It's a secure building with lock codes, men and women's bathrooms, water fountains and other businesses and cafes in the building.
Current Workshop Schedule:

MONDAYS March 5,12,19 (6:30-9:30)
There are 4 main skills that a film actor must master:
CONVERSATION, CONFLICT, LOVE AND COMEDY.
Each role...no matter what the character type... requires 1 or more of these skills in some combination.
You have to learn how to be CASUAL and true to life...the lines have to be thrown away like in a casual conversation.
You have to learn how to FIGHT.
You have to be able to FEEL AND EXPRESS LOVE.
And the hardest of all...you have to learn how to BE FUNNY. How to either land or react to the punchline and live the comic situation.
We offer on-camera training for all the basics of film acting. We emphasize preparation for auditioning and working in the industry. To this end we give you as much actual acting work as possible...each actor gets multiple scenes per class in every genre: drama, comedy, love scenes, characters, fantasy, sci-fi, horror, sit com and period pieces.
Each month we work on monologues, blocking, props, specific audition skills, script analysis and preparation.
Scenes are taped on sd cards for home viewing on your computer. (You must provide your own sd card)
Taught by a working actor with 80+ principal roles in film and TV and over 30 years experience as a coach.
Recent work includes principal roles in the films BOYHOOD, MY ALL AMERICAN, THE DEVIL'S CANDY and THE TELLER AND THE TRUTH. TV series THE SON, LEFTOVERS, AMERICAN CRIME and QUEEN OF THE SOUTH.

A NOTE TO BEGINNERS:
Yes, I get letters like this all the time and so do most other coaches...
"...I'm sure you get this a dozen times throughout the day but I'm new to acting and I have absolutely zero experience, which means no resume, no video or audio real to submit to agencies or projects.
I see that you've been doing this for a great number of years and wanted to see what class you'd recommend for someone who's just starting out..."
You don't want to get the cart before the horse. You can't expect to get an agent to represent you with zero experience and they don't really want a demo unless it's from actual jobs. Yes, you need stuff on your resume but you can't get that without learning to act and to audition. So do that first. Put in 6 months or a year building your skill as an actor and then see what you can do. Meanwhile, you can audition for student films, indies and freebies to build your resume.
There are tons of acting coaches working in Austin now and the important thing is to actually work at acting. Try out a few classes and find one that suits you. My coaching philosophy is fairly easy: anybody can act because acting...especially on film...is just living. The mechanisms are the same even if you are playing another character instead of yourself.
I focus on giving actors as much actual acting work as possible...two or three scenes every class, taped for home viewing as a learning tool. Scenes from every genre....you need to exercise all the Muscles...including the ones outside of your "type". I also believe in mixing the class ...beginners work alongside pros because that way they get to learn from watching good acting. It doesn't hold back the pros because I'll give them "A" scenes while you would get more basic things to start with.
Also, I let you take just one class at a time so you don't have to commit to a long series up front. So if it's too swift for you, you can go elsewhere. Good luck! And let me know if you'd like to try a class. I don't do audits so you'd have to pay $40 to see what I've got.
